I reached out to Champlin Guys after I began having issues with two different 2TB external hard drives. The drives contained years of data ranging from college coursework and software projects to music archives and personal photos.

I made the mistake of putting all of my eggs in one basket, with no backups anywhere, and was unable to get the data off of the drives myself.
Big data recovery labs will charge you thousands to recover your data, but Champlin Guys charged a miniscule fraction of that. Cost aside, they were extremely responsive and explained every step of the process. Best of all, they achieved 99% recovery, even on one of the drives that was in really rough shape.
Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend Champlin Guys, and will be turning to them first for any future data recovery needs.
Response from Champlin GuysThanks for the review Ethan, I’m really happy to hear you had a great experience. Thanks for trusting Champlin Guys Data Recovery with your external hard drives!

I don't normally write reviews. But I want you to hear this.
I am an author. I have made my living by writing books for almost 40 years. I have never been technologically sophisticated and I do not treat my data or storage systems with respect.

In the late 90's I undertook a project that resulted in me transcribing notes on an early generation Mac using a Macwrite program and storing those notes on various disks of various origins. When the book was done I threw those disks unprotected into a dusty drawer where they were exposed to heat and cold and probably spilled coffee. I thought I would never need them and don't even know why I saved them
A few years ago a publisher indicated interest in the book, which had since gone out of print. They also wanted some of the old raw material that had never been published. I had scribbled rough identification notes on some of the disks, but had not kept track of anything.
Desperate, I sent the pile of disks off to a highly reputable and not cheap data recovery service. After weeks of having the disks, they sent me back a jump drive with mostly unintelligible data and code. “The material is unrecoverable,” they told me. I accepted the defeat and gave up on the project.
Recently, publishers have again shown interest. Figuring it was worth one more shot, I found Tyler at Champlin Guys Data Recovery and brought him the disks. I expected I was just throwing money away, but decided it was worth the small investment to once and for all put my fantasies of finding that old manuscript to bed.
Within days, Tyler called me and said he had technologies that might be able to recover some of the material. Long story short, within a week he had done what no one else had been able to do: he had recovered all my material, identified it, organized it and collated it. Not only had he been able to get the data, he had given it back to me in a package that would have amazed a fortune 500 company with its professionalism. He had found lost manuscript fragments that I didn't even remember. And he had been able to give me a running document with narrative clarity and internal notations about areas of concern or unclarity. It was, on all levels, a brilliant job.
If you need professional data recovery of any sort, remember my experience: Tyler at Champlin Guys did in short order and for an incredibly reasonable fee what a highly respected national data recovery service had not been able to do. Put it this way: your data is not lost, it just hasn't been recovered. And Tyler at Champlin Guys is the one who can recover it. In terms of sheer talent and creative cyber skills, he is a miracle worker.

Common SSD recovery situations for Coon Rapids customers

SSD not detected

If the BIOS or Windows no longer sees the drive at all, it can still be a recoverable situation depending on what caused the failure.

Computer won't boot

When a laptop won't start and the SSD is the likely cause, the files may still be intact — it's often the boot structure that failed, not all the data.

Mac SSD or APFS issue

MacBook SSD failures and APFS filesystem issues are a common type of case. These need a careful approach because APFS behaves differently than a standard Windows filesystem.

Deleted files on SSD

SSD TRIM complicates deleted file recovery, but it's not always hopeless depending on how quickly you stopped using the drive after the deletion.

External SSD issues

Portable SSDs that suddenly stop showing up or prompt formatting are recoverable in many cases — the failure mode determines the path.

BitLocker or encrypted SSD

If the SSD is BitLocker-protected or otherwise encrypted, recovery depends on having the recovery key. We can walk you through what's needed.

What not to do with a failing SSD

Don't continue using it after the first sign of a problem

Coon Rapids customers sometimes call after using an SSD for days after it started showing errors — running backups to it, installing software, or trying recovery tools that write to the drive. TRIM operations on a still-running SSD gradually reduce what's recoverable. The moment the SSD starts acting wrong, stop using it as a working drive.

Do not assume it works like a hard drive

SSDs fail differently. No clicking noise, no slowdown warning — and tools built for spinning drives won't always handle SSD failures correctly. The recovery approach is different.

How we approach SSD recovery

Coon Rapids SSD cases sometimes come in after several days of continued laptop use following the first sign of trouble — which is why identifying the failure type before any additional writes is critical. Logical failures like deleted files, corrupted file systems, and APFS issues are often recoverable with the right tools. Controller failures or NAND failures are more serious but sometimes still workable. The important thing is evaluating what's actually wrong before choosing a recovery path, because SSD recovery done wrong can make the situation worse or trigger unnecessary writes to the device.

Why local SSD recovery makes sense for Coon Rapids customers

SSD failures tend to be sudden, which means Coon Rapids customers often contact us the same day it happened. Shipping a failed SSD to a national lab adds days of delay before anyone even looks at it. At 6–8 miles from Champlin, a local drop-off or meetup means the evaluation can start much sooner — and for many SSD failures, faster action genuinely improves the outcome. Coon Rapids is close enough that customers along the Riverdale corridor and near Main Street can often have an evaluation started before the end of the same business day. We'll also give you a straight answer on whether the case needs specialized hardware before you spend money on anything.

SSD recovery FAQ for Coon Rapids customers

Can you recover data from an SSD that won't boot?

Often yes. A drive that won't boot is frequently a boot structure problem, not a complete data loss — especially if the SSD itself is still detected.

Can deleted files be recovered from an SSD in Coon Rapids?

It depends on TRIM status and how long ago the deletion happened. The sooner you stop using the drive, the better the chances.

Does SSD recovery cost more than hard drive recovery?

It depends on the failure type. Simple logical recoveries run the same flat $75–$140. Complex controller failures may be different — we'll tell you before any paid work starts.

What about Mac SSD and APFS recovery?

We work on Mac SSD cases including APFS filesystem issues, T2 chip complications, and MacBooks that won't boot. These need specific handling but are a common type of job.

Do I need to ship my SSD out of state from Coon Rapids?

Not necessarily. Many SSD cases can be handled locally. We'll tell you honestly if specialized hardware is required.

How much does SSD data recovery cost?

Free evaluation. Most recoveries run $75–$140 flat. No recovery, no charge.
