My laptop locked up and failed to turn on. I took it to Geek Squad with the recovery code and they were unable to retrieve my data. I called several local and national data retrieval companies and all had excessive potential charges to retrieve the data and all suggested I likely would not be able to save the laptop.

I called Tyler with Champlin Guys Data Recovery and not only was Tyler able to retrieve my data, he was also able to install a new hard drive and save my expensive laptop, all at an unbelievably fair price. He also went the extra mile and spent a significant amount of time helping me get some of my programs back up and running....all at no charge. He did all this and had the laptop ready for pickup the next day. I will be recommending Tyler and Champlin Guys Date Recovery to anyone who needs their computer serviced.

I reached out to Champlin Guys after I began having issues with two different 2TB external hard drives. The drives contained years of data ranging from college coursework and software projects to music archives and personal photos.

I made the mistake of putting all of my eggs in one basket, with no backups anywhere, and was unable to get the data off of the drives myself.
Big data recovery labs will charge you thousands to recover your data, but Champlin Guys charged a miniscule fraction of that. Cost aside, they were extremely responsive and explained every step of the process. Best of all, they achieved 99% recovery, even on one of the drives that was in really rough shape.
Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend Champlin Guys, and will be turning to them first for any future data recovery needs.
Response from Champlin GuysThanks for the review Ethan, I’m really happy to hear you had a great experience. Thanks for trusting Champlin Guys Data Recovery with your external hard drives!

These guys are hands down the BEST to go to when you've lost your data! They're fast, communicative, and overall very nice people! Tyler picked up my old drive, and dropped off the new one with all of my data safe and sound in under a week!

I also love the fact that they do a flat rate (and extremely reasonable!) fee for data recovery and are very upfront with pricing, unlike the other companies I talked to. It cost less than I expected to get my data back, and to get a new hard drive to replace my broken one. Overall, amazing data recovery service. I'll be recommending these guys to anyone I know that needs their data recovered in the Twin Cities!
Response from Champlin GuysThanks Ross for the great review and for your recommendation! It’s rewarding to us to see a happy customer that got all their back quickly.

I can’t believe my good fortune to find Tyler, who resurrected two Macintosh diskettes full of love letters that my late husband and I had written during our year of courtship and the first year of marriage 31 years ago. He was a writing professor and quite eloquent.

What a gift. The documents are now safely in apdf and docx formats and our family has appreciated reading them, romance and all. We will treasure them always.
Response from Champlin GuysWhat a great story, and I’m so happy you found some missing letters that you were able to enjoy. Thank you for sharing that and for the great review!

Common hard drive recovery situations for Maple Grove customers

Clicking or beeping drive

Stop powering it on and reach out. Clicking often signals a mechanical issue that gets worse with repeated retries.

External drive not detected

If a USB hard drive won't mount, disappeared, or keeps asking to be formatted — that's a common case we evaluate.

Computer won't boot

Sometimes the OS is damaged. Sometimes the hard drive is failing. We can tell you which and recover the files either way.

Accidentally formatted drive

If the data hasn't been overwritten, there's often still a recovery path — especially on a drive that's otherwise physically stable.

Old laptop or desktop drive

Maple Grove home office and small business customers near Arbor Lakes and Weaver Lake Road frequently bring in external drives used as the only backup for QuickBooks files, client records, and years of business documents that were never migrated to cloud storage.

Slow drive with read errors

A drive that copies extremely slowly or throws CRC errors may still have recoverable data, but benefits from imaging first.

What not to do with a failing hard drive

Do not keep trying to access it

Maple Grove home office and small business customers sometimes come in after spending a weekend trying to copy files off a clicking or slow external drive before a Monday deadline. Repeated power-ups on a mechanically failing drive narrow the window fast. Drives that copy slowly can become completely unreadable partway through a large file transfer attempt.

Do not initialize or format it

If Windows asks to initialize or format the disk, stop. That changes the situation from a drive failure to a drive failure plus user changes. Avoid chkdsk on a clearly unstable drive. Avoid writing new data to it.

How we approach hard drive recovery

Many Maple Grove customers arrive after a failed weekend recovery attempt — the drive was slow, copies stopped partway through, and now it clicks more than it did before. The first priority is assessing the drive's current state before any additional access. With hard drives generally, clicking and mechanical symptoms need to be handled differently than logical file system corruption or accidental deletion. If the drive is unstable, imaging it before attempting any broad file copy reduces random strain and gives the best chance of getting everything off before the drive degrades further. The method matters, and we adapt it to what the drive is actually doing.

Why local hard drive recovery makes sense for Maple Grove customers

A lot of Maple Grove hard drive recovery cases don't need a national cleanroom lab. They need a real evaluation from someone nearby who can tell you honestly whether the case is a local recovery, an advanced imaging job, or something that truly requires specialized hardware. At 8–10 miles from Champlin, a local drop-off or meetup is almost always faster than boxing a failing drive, shipping it out of state, and waiting for intake, quote approval, and return shipping — especially when the drive contains family photos or business files you don't want sitting in a national queue. For Maple Grove small business owners near Arbor Lakes or the Main Street corridor, the short drive to Champlin is often faster than coordinating with a shipping carrier, and evaluation can begin the same day the device arrives.

Hard Drive recovery FAQ for Maple Grove customers

Can you recover data from a clicking hard drive?

Sometimes yes, but clicking often points to mechanical failure. Stop powering it on repeatedly and get it evaluated — more retries typically make the situation worse.

What if my hard drive is not showing up in Maple Grove?

That can be caused by the enclosure, USB bridge, file system corruption, or the drive itself. The right answer depends on what's actually failing.

Do I need to ship my hard drive out of state?

Not necessarily. For most Maple Grove logical failures and many physical failures, local recovery is possible. We'll tell you if a specialized cleanroom lab is genuinely needed.

Should I run chkdsk or repair tools first?

Not on a clearly failing drive. Repair tools can make an unstable situation worse. Stop using it and reach out.

How much does hard drive recovery cost for Maple Grove customers?

Free evaluation. Most standard recoveries run $75–$140. No recovery, no charge.

What files can you recover from a hard drive?

Photos, videos, documents, spreadsheets, QuickBooks files, emails, old desktop folders — essentially whatever was on the drive before the failure.
