Mail-in orders carry a flat $25 shipping and handling fee in addition to the recovery price. That covers the pre-paid label that brings the device here and the return trip for your data and your hardware. It applies in two situations: when we successfully recover your data, and when a recovery does not succeed but you want the drive mailed back to you.

If we cannot recover anything and you do not need the device returned, you owe nothing at all — no recovery charge, no handling fee. The label that brings the drive to us is pre-paid either way.

So, plainly

If an SSD or NVMe drive disappeared

Skip the download-and-scan repair utilities. Solid-state failures are typically sudden and electronic rather than mechanical, and consumer "fixer" tools can cement the loss. Note what the machine was doing right before the drive vanished and let us take it from there.

If the device got wet or took a fall

Do not power it on to test it, and do not put it in rice. Leave it as-is, tell us what happened when you contact us, and we will tell you how to pack it before the label goes out.

One exception: iMacs and full-size PCs

Desktop towers and all-in-one machines like iMacs cannot be mailed in — those are drop-off only, in person at Champlin by appointment. Everything else on this page still ships: laptops, MacBooks, external and portable drives, bare internal drives, USB sticks, and memory cards all travel fine in a well-packed box.

The reason is simple. A tower or an iMac is heavy, awkward, and full of glass and rigid mounts that do not survive a bad drop. Packing one to survive a cross-state trip costs more than the recovery in most cases, and we would rather not watch a machine arrive with a cracked panel and a drive that took the shock.

You have two good options

The easiest, if the machine itself is not the point, is to have the drive pulled and mail us just the drive. A bare drive is small, cheap to ship, and it is the part we actually work on.

Otherwise, bring the machine up to Champlin. Text or call first and we will set an appointment window so it is a quick handoff rather than a wait. Since it is a drop-off, the $25 mail-in shipping and handling fee does not apply.

How to box up your device for the trip

Most shipping damage we see is not the carrier's fault — it is a drive with room to move. A drive that arrives rattling is a harder job than the one that left Rochester, and sometimes an impossible one. Ten minutes of packing protects the whole recovery.

A static bag is recommended, not required

If you have an anti-static bag — the silvery-grey kind a drive, a stick of RAM, or a graphics card came in — use it. If you do not have one, do not make a trip to buy one. It is a nice extra layer, not a requirement, and plenty of drives arrive in a plain bag or nothing at all and recover fine. Good padding matters more.

Bubble wrap, and more than feels necessary

Wrap the drive in bubble wrap until it feels like a solid block with no hard edges poking through. Do not use newspaper, towels, or loose packing peanuts as the only cushioning — peanuts shift in transit and let the drive migrate to a corner of the box, which is exactly where it will take the hit.

Use the box-in-a-box method

This is what we recommend for anything with spinning platters, and it is worth the extra minute for any device. Wrap the drive, put it in a small box, and pack that small box with bubble wrap so nothing inside can shift. Then set the small box inside a larger one with bubble wrap filling every gap around it — all six sides, including top and bottom.

The point is that the outer box absorbs the drop and the inner box never feels it. Shake the finished package gently before you seal it. If you hear or feel anything move, open it back up and add more padding.

Put your contact information inside the box

Write your name, phone number, and email address on a sheet of paper and drop it in the box with the device. Shipping labels get scuffed, soaked, or torn off, and a package that arrives without a name attached is a device we cannot match to a person.

It also helps to jot down what happened and which files matter most — even one line. It saves a phone call and means the evaluation can start the moment the box is open.

What to send

Just the device: the failed drive, laptop, USB stick, or memory card. Nothing else needs to go in the box. If you are not sure what to send, text us a photo before you seal it.

Pricing is deliberately boring. There is no hourly rate climbing past $200, no fee just to have someone look at your device, and no storefront markup added on top of a lab's invoice. You get the flat price after the free evaluation and decide from there.
