Before you do anything else with the device

Most of the damage we cannot undo happens in the hours between the failure and the evaluation, while someone is still trying to fix it. A few minutes of restraint now protects the files.

If the drive is making a noise it did not make before

Shut it down and leave it off. Those noises mean the mechanical side of the drive is in trouble, and every additional power cycle gives the heads another chance to scrape the platters. A drive that clicks for ten seconds is a very different job than one that has been clicked at for two days. Do not put it in the freezer, and do not open it up.

If files were deleted or a drive got formatted

The data is usually still physically there. What removes it for good is new writing on top of it, so the goal is to stop using that drive entirely. If it is your only computer, shut it down rather than browsing, installing a recovery tool, or saving anything to it. If it is an external or a card, unplug it and set it aside.

If it is an SSD or NVMe drive

Solid-state failures tend to be abrupt and electronic rather than gradual. One boot it is fine, the next it is missing from the BIOS or reporting the wrong capacity. Random repair utilities and firmware flashes are a genuinely bad idea here, because a controller that is half working can be pushed into not working at all. Leave it alone and let us look at it.

The run north, and why it usually beats mailing your only copy to a lab

Highways 62 and 100 cut Edina into four quarters, so which corner you are starting from changes the first five minutes more than it changes the trip. From most of the city the practical route is US-169 north, and it stays that way until you are nearly to Champlin. Call it 24 miles and about half an hour, with the usual caveat about the Crosstown at 5pm.

Compare that to the national mail-in route: box up the only copy of your files, hand it to a carrier, wait for intake, wait for a quote, approve the quote, then wait again for return shipping. That is often two weeks before anyone tells you what is actually wrong with the drive. Thirty minutes each way, once, is a reasonable trade for a straight answer in a day or two.

Edina has been practical about this kind of thing for a long time. The city takes its name from the Edina Mill on Minnehaha Creek, renamed by a Scottish immigrant, Andrew Craik, after Edinburgh; the name went to a vote in 1888 and carried 47 to 42, the same year the village incorporated. Sixty-eight years later the city did it again on a bigger scale when Southdale opened in 1956 as the first fully enclosed, climate-controlled shopping mall in the country, built specifically so Minnesotans could shop in January. Where a local recovery ends and a cleanroom begins

Being straight about the limits is part of the job. A large share of failures are logical or electronic: deleted files, corrupted partitions, a controller problem, a drive with bad sectors that can still be imaged carefully.
